1. Objective of the Game
In Bohnanza: 25th Anniversary Edition, you’re a bean farmer trying to make the most money by growing, trading, and harvesting beans. Each turn you plant beans, trade with other players, and eventually harvest them for coins. The game ends when the draw pile empties for the third time, and the player with the most coins is declared the winner. If there’s a tie, the player sitting furthest clockwise from the start player wins.
2. Setup
- Shuffle the entire deck of bean cards.
- Deal 5 cards to each player.
- Determine the number of bean fields each player will have:
- 3 players: three bean fields per player.
- 4–5 players: two bean fields per player.
- Optional variants (if you’re using them):
- Cocoa, Brandy, and Coffee beans (3–7 players)
- Field beans (4–5 players)
- Magpie beans (3–7 players)
- AMIGO Bean coin (3–5 players)
- Place the remaining deck face‑down as the draw pile and set the coin bank in the center.
3. Game Flow
Each turn follows this sequence:
- Plant 1 or 2 cards: You may plant one or two cards from your hand into your fields. If you have no room, you must harvest a field instead.
- Draw 2 cards, trade, and donate: Draw two cards, then you may trade those two cards and any cards from your hand with other players. Cards you received in a trade cannot be traded again.
- Plant traded and donated beans: All players must plant any beans they received from trades or donations.
- Draw 3 cards: Draw three cards and place them in your hand in the order you drew them.
At any point during your turn, you may choose to harvest a field. The Bean Protection Rule applies: if you have only one card in one field, you cannot harvest that field if you have two or more cards in another field.
The game ends when the draw pile empties for the third time. At that moment, everyone harvests one final time.
4. Actions and How to Play
- Plant: Place one or two cards from your hand into your fields. You can plant in any field, but you cannot exceed the number of fields you have.
- Harvest: Collect all cards from a single field and receive coins based on the bean type and quantity. You may harvest at any time, but the Bean Protection Rule may restrict which field you can harvest.
- Trade: Exchange cards with other players. You may trade the two cards you just drew and any cards from your hand, but you cannot trade cards you received in a trade.
- Donate: Give cards to other players as part of a trade or separately. Donated cards must be planted by the recipient.
- Draw: Take cards from the draw pile as specified in the turn sequence.
5. End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when the draw pile empties for the third time. At that point, every player performs a final harvest. After all coins are tallied, the player with the most coins wins. If two or more players have the same coin total, the tiebreaker is the player sitting furthest clockwise from the start player.
Consult the manual for details about how coins are awarded for each bean type and quantity.
6. Tips to Win
- Use the Bean Protection Rule strategically: Keep a field with only one card if you have another field with two or more cards, preventing opponents from harvesting that field.
- Plan your planting early: If you have no room to plant, you must harvest a field. Try to keep space open to avoid forced harvesting.
- Mind the trade restrictions: Remember you cannot trade cards you received in a trade. Use this to your advantage by trading only cards you originally drew.
