About the game

What you do in a play session

At the turn of the 20th century, Essen in North‑Rhine Westphalia was Europe's coal‑mining hub. Coal Baron: The Great Card Game plunges you into that gritty world, where you must extract coal from pits, load it onto wagons and ship it along rail lines to distant markets in pursuit of profit. This stand‑alone title is based on the popular 2013 board game, but it expands the experience with almost 240 cards that create a distinct yet equally intense gameplay. Each round blends contracts, hand management, open drafting, set collection and worker placement. You sign contracts that set delivery goals, juggle your hand to keep the right cards at the right time, and engage in an open draft where everyone sees the same pool of options, adding a subtle tug‑of‑war over resources. Collecting sets of coal, locomotives and wagons scores points and unlocks abilities, while placing workers on mining, loading and rail sections determines who runs the most efficient logistics chain. Playtime runs 50‑80 minutes for 2‑4 players, making it perfect for groups that enjoy strategic decisions without overwhelming rulebooks. With a BGG weight of 2.7, the game offers enough depth to challenge seasoned gamers while remaining approachable for newcomers to industrial‑management titles. In the end, the player who best streamlines the production chain and fulfills contracts becomes the true coal baron.
