About the game

What you do in a play session

Ikusa plunges into the chaotic feudal era of Japan, when rival clans fought to become the next Shogun. Each player selects a faction – from powerful daimyos to provincial armies – and strives to consolidate strongholds, recruit ronin and even hire a lone ninja. The game unfolds in rounds where, first, you allocate your koku (resources) into bids and purchases: you decide turn order, acquire castles, fortresses, new troops and the ninja. Then, in the combat phase, players, following the established order, plan simultaneous attacks and resolve them with dice rolls, aiming to capture territories or eliminate the last opposing daimyo. The ultimate goal is to control a set number of areas, either by direct conquest or by absorbing a defeated opponent's forces. The game blends multiple‑lot auctions, area movement, area majority/influence, and simultaneous action selection, creating a tense, strategic experience that can last four to six hours. Components feature a national‑scale map of Japan, detailed miniatures, player screens, and polyhedral dice that flavor the Sengoku war chaos. While the learning curve is moderate, the strategic depth rewards groups who enjoy negotiation, long‑term planning, and a dash of randomness in combat. If you love epic war games with heavy interaction and a rich historical theme, Ikusa delivers an immersive journey into the heart of samurai battles.
