About the game
What you do in a play session
Get ready to dive into Brazilian history between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century. In Imigrantes, you take on the role of an entrepreneur during a period of intense social and economic transformations, shortly after the abolition of slavery. The Brazilian government, in a cruel maneuver that marginalized the Black population, opened its doors to millions of European and Asian immigrants, and it is within this tense and complex scenario that the game unfolds.
The gameplay is divided into 12 rounds, organized into three distinct phases. Each round, event cards based on real facts from Brazilian and world history enter the fray, altering the rules and forcing you to adapt your strategy. With 36 different events, no two games are the same. You will need to use your Managers (the meeples) to perform essential actions: hiring immigrants of various nationalities, activating coffee or industrial production, collecting taxes in cities, and, of course, seeking political favors to secure advantages.
The heart of the game lies in the balance between economic management and set collection. You must decide whether to invest in expanding your territories or focus on assembling the best combination of workers to optimize your production. The ultimate goal is to develop the region as efficiently as possible. Victory is decided by the sum of points from your expansion tiles, bonus cards, and the efficiency of your product sales points. It's a medium-to-heavy game, ideal for those who enjoy thinking several moves ahead and appreciate the intersection of solid mechanics and real historical context. If you enjoy seeing your empire grow while dealing with the political instability of a developing nation, Imigrantes is the right choice.
