About the game
What you do in a play session
Kalah, also known as Mancala, is that classic strategy game that makes your brain work at counting speed. Invented in 1940 by William Champion Jr., it hit the market in 1944 and became the standard for the Mancala family. The board features two rows of six pits each, with a large store (the Kalah) on each end. Each player controls the six pits closest to them and the store on their right side. The game starts with four seeds in each pit—the most common variant—though beginners can start with three, while more experienced players can risk five or six seeds per pit. The mechanic is simple: you pick a pit, remove all its seeds, and distribute them one by one counter‑clockwise, skipping the opponent’s store. If the last seed lands in your own store, you get another turn; if it lands in an empty pit on your side, you capture all seeds from the opposite pit and put them in your store. If the last seed lands in an opponent’s pit or a non‑empty pit of yours, the turn ends without capture. The game ends when a player runs out of seeds in their pits; the other player automatically captures the remaining seeds. Whoever has more seeds in their store wins. Kalah is pure logic: no luck, just planning, counting, and predicting sequences. It’s perfect for those who enjoy mental challenges without visual distractions, and it works well in quick 10‑minute matches. Plus, it’s available on various digital platforms—Apple App Store, Board Game Arena, Tabletopia, and mobile apps—so you can play anywhere. If you love abstract strategy games, Kalah is your next step!
