Ever played a game so timeless it feels like it's always existed? That's Nine Men's Morris (known as 'Trilha' in Brazil). With thousands of years of history, this game was once the go-to pastime for everyone from monks in monasteries to villagers in the English countryside, proving that the love for strategic brain-burners is truly universal.

The premise is straightforward, but the execution is where the real challenge lies. Two players, each controlling nine pieces (typically black and white), battle it out on a board of connected lines. The game unfolds in stages: first, the placement phase, where you strategically drop your pieces to form a 'mill'—three pieces in a row. Once you complete a mill, you get the reward of removing one of your opponent's pieces from the board. After all pieces are placed, the game shifts to the movement phase, where you slide your pieces along the lines to create new mills and further deplete the opponent's forces.

Things get interesting when a player is reduced to only three pieces. To keep the game competitive and prevent a quick defeat, this player gains a special ability: they can move any of their pieces to any empty spot on the board. This allows for desperate blocking maneuvers or sudden offensive strikes to try and turn the tide. The game ends the moment a player is left with only two pieces, as they can no longer form a mill, handing the victory to their opponent.
