About the game
What you do in a play session
Get ready to dive into the world of "O Cortiço" (The Tenement), Aluísio Azevedo's classic novel, but now in your hands! In this game, you take on the role of João Romão, an entrepreneur (or perhaps not so much) who stops at nothing to get rich. The objective is clear: build your tenement, rent out the small houses, negotiate with neighbors (and anyone else who shows up!), and maybe even provide some 'help' to speed up the process, like setting fire to rival properties (and hoping yours doesn't catch fire!).
Each turn is a strategic play with three types of cards: properties to expand your empire, tenants to populate and generate income, and action cards that can give you that crucial edge. But beware, the game is inspired by a novel, so expect twists, conflicts, and the need to adapt. Competition is fierce, as everyone aims to accumulate the greatest fortune, just as João Romão himself sought in the book.
"O Cortiço" is a great choice for those who enjoy economic games with a touch of negotiation and hand management, all wrapped in a rich cultural theme. It's a fun and interactive way to revisit a landmark of Brazilian literature, understand a bit more about the social formation of our country, and, of course, have fun with strategy and a bit of board game 'cunning'. Prepare to build, rent, negotiate, and perhaps burn your way to victory!
