About the game
What you do in a play session
Imagine that humanity received a technological 'push' from beings from outer space. In Origins: First Builders, you step into the shoes of an Archon, a leader chosen by these alien benefactors to guide your people toward prosperity. Your goal? To leave the deepest possible mark on ancient history by building monumental cities and climbing sacred temples.
You start with the basics: just the Agora and the Palace. From there, the fun begins as you expand your city by placing new building tiles. Each new building brings special abilities that trigger upon construction or when you close a district, creating interesting combos. But it's not just about building; you also need to manage your military strength. The military track isn't just for attacking; it determines turn order, providing essential strategic control for those who want to dominate the table.
The game runs in rounds where tension builds until everyone passes. The race is frantic: you need to climb the three zodiac temples (Sea, Forest, and Mountain), but here's the twist: your final score is based on your two LOWEST-valued temples. This forces you to balance your progress instead of focusing on just one, creating a constant dilemma about where to invest your resources.
The game ends when resources run out (tower disks, gold, or citizen dice) or when someone dominates all the temples. It's a game of management, placement, and keen observation of your opponents' moves, as the open drafting keeps everything exposed. If you enjoy civilization-building games with a dash of sci-fi and clever dice mechanics, this is the game for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you buy
Is the game too complex?
It has a medium weight (3.3 on BGG), so it's not a gateway game. There are several interlocking rules, but it flows well once you get the rhythm.
How long does a game take?
Expect something between 60 and 120 minutes. The time varies depending on how competitive players are in the temple race.
Does it work well in solo mode?
Yes, the game supports 1 to 4 players, allowing you to test your building strategies on your own.
Do I need a translation to play?
Yes, there is moderate language dependency. Since there are cards with abilities, a spreadsheet or translation helps a lot.
Who do you recommend this game for?
For those who enjoy worker placement, city building, and planning combos to maximize points.
Do the dice introduce too much luck?
Dice are used as workers, so there is randomness, but the open drafting allows you to mitigate luck by choosing what you need.
