In Tekhenu: Obelisk of the Sun, you step into the shoes of a pharaoh tasked with building the grandest temple in the world, but you must contend with the treacherous shadow of the central obelisk. The board is divided into six sections, each guarded by an Egyptian god—Horus, Ra, Hathor, Bastet, Thoth, and Osiris—and the obelisk’s shadow turns parts of the map into “sunny,” “shaded,” or “dark” each round. This means the availability of actions and resources shifts dynamically, forcing you to plan your dice draft carefully. You can choose from five colored dice, each of which can be pure, tainted, or forbidden depending on the shadow’s position. Forbidden dice are simply inactive, but the others let you perform actions based on the god of the section you drafted from. If you prefer, you can opt to “produce” resources; however, overproducing adds taint and can be costly in your turn order. Turn order isn’t a fixed cycle; it’s determined by accumulated statistics, making production control and turn strategy essential. At the end, you score points in two ways: by building structures—like statues, pillars, and workshops—and by keeping your population happy. But beware: if you run out of resources, the populace suffers and you lose points. Tekhenu blends open drafting, pattern building, and income management, all wrapped in a mythic setting reminiscent of the ancient Karnak temples. If you enjoy games that demand careful planning, timing awareness, and a dash of luck, you’ll have a blast!
