About the game
What you do in a play session
Otter is a quick, cute card game that pits you and up to three friends (or just yourself) in a race to empty your hand first. The board features three otters, each bearing two separate rules: a number on its "head" and a suit on its "tail." To play a card on an otter you must satisfy at least one rule; if you satisfy both you earn an extra turn on that same otter, allowing for potentially epic chains.
The twist comes from the ability to draw cards before playing to flip or swap heads and tails, changing the otter's rules on the fly. This lets you set up larger combos, but it can also hand you cards you can't use that turn, forcing a risk‑vs‑reward decision.
After each round, any cards left in your hand are kept for the next round, and then you draw back up to ten cards. This retention loop creates constant tension: hoarding a big suit set can give you a powerful combo, but if another player goes out first you lose the head start for the next round.
The result is a game that blends the speed of a shedding race with the thoughtfulness of a puzzle: you must balance rapid plays, resource holding, and knowing when to pivot. A single match lasts 15‑30 minutes, has very light rules (weight 1.75), and works solo or with a group, making it a perfect short filler with a marine theme and plenty of otter charm.
