Sanctum is a competitive strategy game that captures the essence of hack‑and‑slash RPGs, but in board game form. Each session starts with four unique heroes, each with a skill set that evolves quickly and distinctly. The primary goal is to reach the heart of the fallen city and defeat the Demon Lord, but it’s not an elimination race: players compete to advance further, choose gear first, and secure bonuses that boost their odds of victory. The board is a winding path divided into action spaces where you can move, fight, rest, or draft equipment. Moving advances you toward the goal and lets you leave enemies to face later. Fighting tackles all demons you’ve marked, and victory grants skill upgrades and items. Resting allows you to equip items, recharge combat resources, and sell surplus objects for potions. The deck, bag, and pool building mechanic lets you select and improve your action cards, while dice rolls and stat checks determine the effectiveness of each attack. Worker placement with dice adds a strategic positioning layer, requiring you to choose where to place workers to maximize resources. The pace is fast, with overlapping turns, keeping tension high. The final showdown against the Demon Lord is brutal, but even surviving is a win. If you enjoy tactical combat, character progression, and healthy competition, Sanctum has plenty to offer.
