About the game
What you do in a play session
Welcome to the bridge! In Starship Captains each player steps into the shoes of a freshly promoted captain, tasked with their first starship and a crew that’s still a bit green – cadets, ensigns, androids and officers. The goal is to earn reputation with three galactic factions by completing missions, battling pirates and unearthing ancient artifacts. To do that you’ll select actions in a hybrid action‑selection/engine‑building system: placing workers on specific spots on the board lets you gather resources, train crew and develop technologies that generate powerful synergies. Each worker type has its own special ability, so deciding whether to send a cadet or an android to a location can swing your strategy.
The game starts with a variable set‑up – the interplanetary map, missions and rewards shift each play, ensuring no two games feel the same. Turn order progresses as players move forward in the narrative, reflecting who’s ahead in the missions. At the end, end‑game bonuses reward medals, the strongest fleet or secret objectives, making long‑term planning as crucial as daily tactical choices.
Starship Captains supports 1‑4 players, featuring a solid solo mode that uses challenge cards to simulate opponents. Play time ranges from 25 to 100 minutes, fitting both quick sessions and longer space‑exploration evenings. Components include a large interstellar map, detailed miniatures for ships, and crew tokens, all illustrated with classic sci‑fi flair. If you love Eurogames that blend resource management, engine building and a space‑exploration theme, this title delivers a balanced, fun, and twist‑filled cosmic adventure.
