About the game

What you do in a play session

In Victorian times, inventors and tinkers gather to turn clocks, steam and Tesla‑style electricity into machines that promise glory to Queen Victoria. In Steam Works, each player takes on the role of an inventor with unique starting abilities and components. The core of the game is assembling devices from modular tiles: energy sources (clockwork, steam or electricity) connect to components that grant a variety of effects – from resources to prestige points. It starts simple, with two tiles (a source and a component), but as players craft more intricate combos, devices of three, four or more tiles appear, becoming new action spaces for everyone. This "build for others to use" mechanic creates a constant loop of interaction.

Worker placement lets you gather components and sources, while open drafting gives you the freedom to pick the tiles that best fit your plan. Variable player powers ensure each inventor feels distinct, and the modular board with tile placement generates a fresh layout each game, offering high replayability. For 2‑5 players, games run 90‑120 minutes, and the moderate complexity (weight 3.1) is approachable for anyone familiar with worker placement and tableau building. If you love steampunk, mad science, and the thrill of constructing machines that your opponents will scramble to use, Steam Works delivers all that with plenty of charm and strategic depth.
