This traditional game, dating back to 1732 and documented by the naturalist Linnaeus in Lapland, is pure abstract strategy with a medieval touch (and maybe a flirtation with science fiction, depending on your imagination!). The setting is a 9x9 board, where one player commands the 'Shields' and the other, the 'Swords'. The Swords' mission is to capture the King, the central piece of the Shields. The Shields, in turn, need to clear a path for the King to escape off the board's edges. Pieces move in a straight line, any number of spaces, and capture occurs when a piece is 'bracketed' by two enemy pieces. It's an ancient board game, a distant cousin of chess, but with its own unique dynamics. The initial setup is symmetrical, but the objectives and piece counts differ for each side, creating constant tension.
