About the game
What you do in a play session
In 'The Alpha', you take command of a hungry wolf pack, racing to secure the most food before winter arrives. The game unfolds over five rounds, with each stage of the hunt being crucial. First, you send your wolves to hunt in different forest regions: the Near Forest, with easier, lower-value prey, and the Far Forest, where the hunt is riskier but the reward is much greater. The goal is to outnumber rival packs to secure dominance in each area.
After choosing where to hunt, comes the 'Chase' phase, where dice determine the success of your pursuit. But it's in the 'Resolve' phase that things get tense! If another pack is in the same region, you must decide: fight for the food and risk injury, or share and leave empty-pawed? This 'prisoner's dilemma' mechanic adds a layer of tension and bluffing that will keep everyone on the edge of their seats.
Finally, you advance on the food track, marking what you've secured. At the end of the five weeks, the pack with the most food will be crowned 'The Alpha'. With simple rules and quick games (20-45 minutes), it's a light abstract strategy game with a touch of psychology and an animal theme that appeals to both family and friends. The art, inspired by a park ranger, adds a special touch. It's an excellent option for those looking for something quick, yet with interesting decisions.
