About the game

What you do in a play session

Get ready to embark on an epic journey with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Deck-Building Game! In this game, you join Thorin Oakenshield's Company, taking on the role of one of the iconic heroes like Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, or Thorin himself, as you trek the perilous path to the Lonely Mountain. Your Hero card can guide your strategy, but the freedom is yours to forge your own plan towards victory. Each player starts with a basic ten-card deck and, each turn, draws five cards to their hand. 'Power' is the currency you'll use to acquire stronger and more varied cards, essential for transforming your deck into a well-oiled machine. There are five types of cards to collect: Enemies, Allies, Artifacts, Maneuvers, and Locations. A central 'Path' of five always-visible cards offers new purchase options each round, ensuring the adventure is never the same. Accumulate enough power and you can face fearsome Archenemies! Defeating a Troll might yield legendary items like Sting, Orcrist, or Glamdring. Vanquishing the Goblin King can give you the maneuvers needed to escape the Misty Mountains. And don't forget Azog, the final Archenemy, with whom you have unfinished business! In the end, the player with the most Victory Points in their deck will be the grand winner of this unexpected journey.
