About the game
What you do in a play session
Embark on a covert mission with 'The Vinh Raid,' a counterfactual historical wargame that puts you in command of a daring U.S. Marine operation. The real story from February 1971, during Operation Lam Son 719, saw two rifle companies from Battalion Landing Team 3/9 preparing to fly into North Vietnam, seize Vinh airfield, demolish its facilities, and withdraw within twenty-four hours. The order to proceed never came in real life, but here, in the game, it does! Over eight three-hour turns (in-game, of course!), your mission is to secure the airfield, deal with anti-aircraft defenses and an uncertain enemy garrison, demolish key targets, and get out before the North Vietnamese response closes around your landing zone. Prepare for the unexpected, as enemy strengths are partly hidden, and local and regional reinforcements can arrive at any moment. Air power is a double-edged sword: helicopter movement, Cobra support, and extraction offer an advantage but increase the risk of casualties due to air engagement. You'll need to balance speed and firepower against exposure to danger. The final decision is yours: follow the planned helicopter extraction, risk a hot landing zone, or fall back on the slower boat contingency. Success is not just measured by the damage done at Vinh, but primarily by getting your Marines home safely. Do you have what it takes to rewrite history?
