Game in a Nutshell - Tiletum (how to play)
Step by step
1. Objective of the Game
In Tiletum, you and your friends play as wealthy merchants journeying across Renaissance Europe, from the city of Tiletum to Venice. Your goal is to become the most famous merchant by scoring the most Victory Points (VP). You achieve this by acquiring trade contracts for wool and iron, building trade houses, investing in cathedrals, gaining the favor of noble families, and participating in fairs where the bulk of your business takes place.
2. Setup (Preparation)
- Place the game board in the center of the table. The right side contains the map of Europe.
- Set out the resource tokens (Gold, Food, Wool, Stone, Iron) and Action Point counters within reach of all players.
- Place the Action Wheel in its dedicated space in the top‑left corner of the board. Rotate it so that each numbered segment aligns with a single Action.
- Separate all Bonus tiles, Contract tiles, and Character tiles by type, according to the number of players. Remove tiles marked “4” for 3 players, and remove tiles marked “3+” or “4” for 2 players.
- Shuffle the Bonus tiles and place them face‑down next to the board. Randomly place six Bonus tiles face‑up on the Action tiles (some may show Contracts or Crests). Place one Bonus tile next to the King track and the required number of Bonus tiles on the map.
- Shuffle the Contract tiles and place them face‑down next to the board. Draw five and place them face‑up on their dedicated spaces; these are the Contract offers. Add one Bonus tile to the space next to the King track and one to each map space.
- Shuffle the Character tiles and place them face‑down next to the board. Draw five and place them face‑up on their dedicated spaces; these are the Character offers.
- Shuffle the Construction Cost tiles and place one under each Cathedral spot. Group the Cathedral tiles by type and sort them from lowest to highest VP. Place each group on its dedicated space.
- Shuffle and randomly place three Town tiles and four Fair tiles on their corresponding spaces. The Unavailable Cathedral tile is removed from play.
- Place Fair Order tiles in the cities where the Fairs will take place.
- Shuffle the Corruption tokens, place them face‑down in a stack next to the Turn track, and randomly select three to place face‑down on their dedicated spaces on the Turn track.
- Determine the first player and give them the Compass Rose marker. The next player clockwise becomes the second player, and so on.
- Each player chooses a color and takes the following components in that color:
- 1 Player board
- 3 markers: one on the Scoring track at “10”, one on the King track at “0 VP” (stacked with the first player’s marker at the bottom), and one on the Turn Order track
- 1 Merchant and 1 Architect, placed next to the Tiletum town space on the map
- 8 Houses: 5 on the roof spaces of the Player board, 1 in Tiletum, and 2 next to the board as supply
- 7 Pillars: 5 on the first 5 Contract spaces of the Player board, 2 next to the board as supply
- 5 Bonus Action Point markers next to the board
- Each player takes 1 Iron, 1 Wool, 1 Stone, and 1 Food. The first player takes 1 Gold, the second 3, the third 5 (if playing with at least 3 players), and the fourth 6 (if playing with 4 players).
- Put 1 die of each color per player in the dice bag. In a 4‑player game, there will be 20 dice; in a 3‑player game, 15 dice; in a 2‑player game, 10 dice. Return any unused dice to the box.
3. Flow of the Game
The game lasts four rounds. Each round is divided into five phases that must be carried out in the following order:
- Preparation Phase
- Take from the bag 8 dice (2‑player), 11 dice (3‑player), or 14 dice (4‑player). Roll all dice and place them around the Action Wheel according to their value.
- The first player reveals the rightmost face‑down Corruption token and moves all player markers on the King track left by the token’s value (0, 1, or 2). Markers cannot move beyond the leftmost position.
- Action Phase
- Players take turns in order. On a turn, a player:
- Chooses one die from the Action Wheel and takes it.
- Collects the Resources equal to the die’s value and color.
- Performs the Action associated with the die’s space.
- Before taking a die, a player may spend 2 Gold to add or subtract 1 from the die’s value (multiple times allowed). The die’s value is permanently changed.
- If the chosen Action still has a Bonus tile, the player may take it and place it in their Storehouse (optional). A taken tile cannot be discarded.
- After all players have taken three turns, the Action Phase ends.
- Players take turns in order. On a turn, a player:
- King Phase
- The player whose marker is highest on the King track takes (or discards) the Bonus tile next to the track. If none is available (last round), that player scores 4 VP.
- All players score points according to their position on the King track (higher = more VP, lower = fewer VP).
- Adjust the Turn Order track so that the highest King track player becomes first, the second highest second, etc. Ties are broken in favor of the player with the bottommost marker.
- Any markers in the lower (
