About the game

What you do in a play session

In Tonga Bonga each player commands a ship sailing around a tiny archipelago. The main goal is to visit four of the five remote islands and then return to Tonga Bonga Bay. Winning the race, however, doesn’t decide the game – the player with the most cash at the end wins. Each vessel holds three sailors, represented by dice. At the start of a round players bid money to hire a captain and a first mate; the cabin boy works for free. Then they roll their three dice and assign each die to an opponent’s ship – never to their own. The highest‑valued die takes the captain slot, pushing any existing die down to first mate or out of the crew. One side of each die shows a seasick sailor who can’t go to sea that turn, so not every ship will be fully crewed. After placement, players move their ships, trying to be the first to reach islands. Landing on an island grants $25 from the bank, but the player must then pay $5 to each opponent who landed there earlier. At round’s end, whoever holds the captain or first‑mate dice collects the wage shown next to those positions. A player who has visited four islands and returns to the bay earns a $10 bonus, and the game ends after that round. The winner is the richest player. The game blends betting, bribery, dice rolling and set collection, creating a dice‑fest where strategic choices and bluffing matter as much as luck.
