About the game
What you do in a play session
In Yokai Septet you play an onmyoji – a master of Japanese esoteric cosmology – tasked with capturing Yokai, the spirits and demons that plague villages. The game unfolds in trick‑taking rounds: each player plays a card from their hand following trick rules, and the highest card of the led suit wins all cards played that turn. The cards represent various Yokai, some of which are high‑scoring Bosses. In a four‑player game, players form two teams and compete to have their side capture four or more Bosses; in a three‑player game, everyone plays solo and needs to capture three or more Bosses to win the round. The round winner scores points based on the Bosses they captured, and new rounds continue until a player reaches the victory threshold – 2 points for a quick game or 7 points for an advanced match. The components include a 49‑card deck (seven suits of seven cards), scoring tokens, player aids, and a lead player card. The blend of team‑based play with classic trick‑taking creates a strategic tug‑of‑war where timing a powerful Yokai or holding back support cards can swing the outcome. The Japanese mythic theme, full of supernatural creatures, adds visual charm and narrative flavor, while the rules are simple enough to learn in minutes yet deep enough to keep seasoned gamers engaged. Perfect for fans of fast card games, team battles, and a dash of oriental fantasy.
