About the game

What you do in a play session

Age of Mythology: The Boardgame brings the same rush of the legendary real‑time strategy games to the tabletop, but with 3‑D miniatures that bring warriors, priests, heroes and mythic creatures of the Greek, Egyptian and Norse cultures to life. Each player picks a civilization and begins exploring the board for farms, gold mines, lumber camps and temples – the essential resource sources. Those resources let you build structures – some special ones are prerequisites for recruiting advanced units or improving existing abilities.

The core of the game is combat, resolved by a hybrid dice‑and‑card system. A single die determines the basic outcome, while battle cards add effects, modifiers and strategic choices that keep the pace brisk. The game also uses rock‑paper‑scissors for certain clashes, secret unit deployment, and variable phase order, meaning each turn can follow a different path depending on the cards played. Each civilization has unique powers, ensuring each play‑through feels distinct.

With an average playtime of about two hours, the game supports 2‑4 players and carries a light complexity rating (around 2.9/5), perfect for strategy lovers who don’t want endless rulebooks. The components are sturdy, with detailed miniatures that give an epic look to skirmishes. If you’ve ever dabbled in Age of Empires or Age of Mythology on PC, you’ll recognize the feeling of gathering resources, expanding your empire and fielding powerful armies against opponents. It’s an excellent gateway for RTS fans looking for a comparable analog experience.
