About the game

What you do in a play session

Get ready to enter a world where demi-gods, known as Phoenixborn, are the only ones capable of protecting humanity from monstrous creatures. In the beginning, they were the saviors, but peace was short-lived. A dark prophecy revealed that whoever could absorb the ashes of others would ascend to the status of a supreme god. The result? The War of Ashes, a brutal conflict where entire cities fight under the command of their respective Phoenixborn. Now it's your turn to decide who will rule the world and who will turn to dust.

In terms of gameplay, you take control of one of these heroes and must build your spellbook and recruit allies to annihilate your opponents. The real draw here is the strategic depth: you don't just play cards, but manage your resources through mana dice. The choice of how to use these dice—or when to sacrifice other resources to improve them—defines the pace of the battle. Additionally, the initial hand selection is crucial, allowing you to enter the match with a clear game plan already in mind.

It's worth noting that the 'Reborn' version brings important adjustments. Plaid Hat Games revised about 30% of the cards across all expansions to balance the game, while also refining the rulebook to make powers clearer. If you already owned the original version, there's even an upgrade kit to bring your collection up to the 1.5 version. This is a tactical combat game with variable player powers that make each character unique, requiring you to adapt your strategy depending on who is across the table. If you enjoy card games with a fantasy theme and love the feeling that a single mana decision can flip the game, Ashes is the right choice.

It has a medium weight (around 2.9 on BGG). It's not ultra-complex, but it requires attention to unique character abilities and mana management.
How long does a game last?
It varies quite a bit! From 30 minutes for quick fights to 120 minutes for more epic and strategic confrontations.
How many people can play?
The game supports 2 to 4 players, though the most common and focused experience is the head-to-head duel.
What is the difference between the Reborn version and the original?
The Reborn version balanced about 30% of the cards and clarified the rules to avoid ambiguities regarding powers.
