Game Objective
The objective of Cryo is to rescue the crew pods and establish yourselves in the underground caves before the sun sets. Players compete to gather resources, build vehicles, and move crew to the caves while dealing with incidents and sabotage. Victory is achieved by having the most points, calculated based on crew in the caves, upgrades, vehicles, and missions.
Setup
To set up the game, follow these steps:
- Board: Place the game board in the center of the table.
- Starting Pieces: Each player chooses a color and takes their platform, drones, and 4 resource markers (1 crystal, 1 organic, 1 tech, 1 nanite).
- Cards: Shuffle the deck and deal 5 cards to each player. Each player chooses 3 cards to keep and discards 2.
- Resources: Separate the resource tokens by type and place face-down stacks on corresponding spaces. Flip the first token of each stack face-up.
- Incidents: Separate the incident tokens and place 1 face-up token on each incident space.
- Caves: Place 1 cave tile face-down on each space. Flip the first 2 highlighted caves face-up.
- First Player: Randomly determine who starts the game.
Refer to the rulebook for details on setting up custom actions on the platform.
Game Flow
The game progresses through player turns, following this order:
- Player Turn: The player chooses between Deploying a drone or Recalling drones for actions on the platform. Then, they may use Scrap once per turn.
- End of Turn: The player discards excess cards (maximum of 5 cards).
The game ends when:
- The Sunset token is resolved (at the end of the turn of the player who resolves it).
- Any player has all their crew pods in the caves (or destroyed).
Actions and How to Play
The available actions are:
Deploy
Place 1 drone from your platform onto an open dock on the board and perform 1 adjacent action. Each dock has up to 4 adjacent actions with specific costs. Example: The Scout dock allows exploring face-down caves.
Recall
Return drones from the board to your platform to use custom actions. The steps are:
- Recover Salvage: Gain 1 resource per crew pod in salvage.
- Resolve Incidents: Choose 1 face-up incident token and resolve its effect (sabotage, loot, or sunset).
- Return Drones: Move drones to open docks on the platform and perform associated actions.
Scrap
Discard 1 card or 1 resource tile from your platform to gain its benefit (maximum 1 per turn). This can be used during Deploy or Recall.
Platform
The platform has custom actions filled with resource tiles. Example:
- Awaken: Pay the tile's cost to awaken 1 crew pod of your color.
- Fabricate: Pay resources to gain technology.
End Game and Scoring
The game ends as described above. Scoring is calculated as follows:
- Caves: Points based on the number of crew pods (more pods = more points).
- Upgrades and Vehicles: 1 point for each upgrade and vehicle on the platform.
- Missions: Points according to cards played as missions.
- Crew on Platform: 1 point per pod on the platform or in a vehicle.
In case of ties, the player with the most crew pods in the caves wins. If still tied, they share the victory.
Tips for Winning
- Use Scrap strategically: Discard cards or resources to gain critical benefits, such as extra energy or rare resources.
- Prioritize low-cost caves: Explore adjacent caves to minimize settlement costs.
- Protect crew in salvage: Assign pods to salvage to ensure resources when needed.
Refer to the rulebook for details on specific mechanics, such as incident resolution or card effects.
