About the game
What you do in a play session
Petrichor: Cactus, Lake & Fertilizer arrives as an expansion that deepens the arid, poetic world of Petrichor. The set includes two punch‑board tiles that slot onto the existing modular board, introducing two new crop areas: the Cactus (Opuntia ficus‑indica) and the Lake (Lacus Ludus). Each tile brings its own rules, and the cactus comes with a special token for unique interactions. The expansion also adds fertilizer tokens, which act as a bonus: fertilized crops yield extra points at game end, adding another layer of decision‑making about where to invest resources.
The core Area Majority / Influence mechanic remains key – controlling the most cactus or lake spaces grants greater influence – but now players must also manage their hand and decide when to apply fertilizer. The Modular Board ensures each game has a fresh layout, while voting may appear when players need to settle optional rules or card effects. All of this fits the Environmental and Farming theme, reinforcing the feeling of tending a desert ecosystem.
Unlocked during the 2017 Kickstarter campaign, the new rules are printed on the last page of the base‑game rulebook for easy integration. If you already enjoy the base game, you’ll appreciate the added variety at setup and the deeper strategic choices without overwhelming complexity. Suitable for 1‑4 players, with playtime ranging from 20 to 80 minutes depending on player count and fertilizer usage. In short, it’s a tasty upgrade for anyone craving more cacti, more lake, and more farming decisions.
