About the game
What you do in a play session
Quartermaster General: Victory or Death – The Peloponnesian War brings the clash between Athens and Sparta to the tabletop, but does it in team mode: up to four players split between the Athenian fleet (and the Delian League) and the Spartan phalanx (with Corinth). A single playthrough lasts 90 minutes to two hours, and the pacing was tweaked to keep the action lively despite the lower player count compared to earlier Quartermaster General titles. The engine of the game is its cards – they drive campaigns, battles and strategic preparations. In the Planning step you may lay a Prepare card on the table; these act like expanded Response cards, enabling powerful combos in later turns. At the start of each turn the Strategy step lets you pick which cards to play, followed by the Action step that resolves them. Area control comes into play as you vie for dominance over regions of the Greek mainland and the Aegean Sea, turning influence into victory points. Hand management is vital: deciding which cards to keep, discard or prepare determines whether you will dominate the seas, the land, or both. Athens shines in naval trade, while Sparta fields an almost unbeatable phalanx, creating a tactical contrast that forces teammates to synergize. Components include a continental‑scale map, unit miniatures and beautifully illustrated card decks. While the card text assumes some familiarity with ancient terminology (or a translated sheet), the learning curve isn’t steep for fans of war games or euro‑style area‑control titles. In short, the game offers an immersive historical experience, plenty of team interaction and strategic choices that feel like a genuine ancient campaign.
