About the game

What you do in a play session

Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame arrived in 2002 as the first attempt to translate the legendary strategy video game into a tabletop experience. Each game starts in 4000 BC, when players found two small villages and begin exploring a 46" × 36" world map filled with resources, native tribes and uncharted territories. The core goal is to guide your civilization from the Stone Age to the Renaissance, passing through four city size stages – village, town, capital and metropolis – which boost production and allow you to build military units, ships, artillery and even aircraft in the later eras.

The game provides two rule sets: a standard, more accessible one, and an advanced version that adds deeper layers such as trade routes, detailed tech trees and world wonders that grant unique bonuses. Mechanics are diverse: area movement, dice rolling for combat and production, open drafting of technology and wonder cards, set collection for scoring, simultaneous action selection for tension, and player trading. The massive global board, 784 sculpted plastic pieces, and over 100 full‑color cards give the theme a hefty visual presence.

Playtime ranges from two to six hours, depending on player count and whether the advanced rules are used. Strategy, diplomacy and long‑term planning are essential, yet the randomness of dice and cards ensures no two games feel the same. If you love epic games that simulate empire building and don’t mind a longer playtime, Civilization: The Boardgame delivers a rich, immersive experience faithful to its digital predecessor.
