You can choose a 'clean' approach, focusing on sustainability, or accelerate your industrial production, accepting the risk of polluting your territory. If pollution gets out of hand, it can literally block your cards and steal your points at the end. It's a sprint of efficiency that ends once everyone completes their 9 cards.
