About the game

What you do in a play session

Get ready to relive one of the most shocking moments of World War II with The Blitzkrieg Legend: The Battle for France, 1940! This is the twelfth title in the acclaimed Operational Combat Series (OCS) and puts you in command of the German 'Case Yellow' offensive of May 1940. In less than a month, this lightning campaign swept through Belgium and Holland, dismantled the French armies, and cornered the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk. Unlike other games in the series, Blitzkrieg Legend uses a ground scale of 3 miles per hex and two-day turns, allowing this intense campaign to unfold with more room for maneuver and densely packed units. While many see the historical outcome as inevitable, the game challenges you to explore the crucial decisions that could have changed the course of history. If you play as the Allies, you'll face French, Belgian, Dutch, and British units that had not yet mastered the fast pace of modern warfare. They are slower and don't fight at full strength in move mode. Furthermore, the historical Dyle Plan, which left French reserves vulnerable and the best forces committed to defending Antwerp and Brussels, is also a challenge. The game offers 'What if I was in charge...' scenarios to explore alternative initial deployments. Victory is determined by objectives such as the French protection of Paris, Verdun, and Metz, the surrender of Holland and Belgium, and the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force. Special rules add flavor to the campaign, such as the Maginot Line, special operations to capture bridges and forts, and even the appearance of ships, elite battalions, and Spitfires to aid the isolated British Expeditionary Force. With 7 scenarios and 3 campaigns, including one that can be played to completion in 13 turns, this is a treat for anyone seeking historical depth and an immense strategic challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

7 questions
What is the average playtime for The Blitzkrieg Legend?
A full game can take a good 48 hours of play (2880 minutes), but don't worry! The game comes with 7 scenarios and 3 campaigns, some much shorter, like the 'Arras' scenario which lasts only one turn, or the longest campaign which has 13 turns and can be completed in a more extended session.
How many players is The Blitzkrieg Legend recommended for?
This is a two-player exclusive game. It's a strategic duel where one player controls the Allied forces and the other the German forces, providing a direct and intense confrontation.
What is the complexity level of the game?
The Blitzkrieg Legend is considered a highly complex game (BGG weight of 3.8966/5). It's part of the OCS series, known for its depth and detail, so expect robust rules and many strategic decisions.
What are the main components included in the box?
The box is packed! It includes the OCS Series Rulebook, a game-specific rulebook, two Charts and Tables booklets, three full-color game maps (two 22x34 inches and one 28x15 inches), an impressive 1,960 counters (on 7 counter sheets), an 8.5x11 Play Aid, and, of course, dice.
Is The Blitzkrieg Legend a good game for wargame beginners?
Honestly, it's not ideal for beginners. The complexity and playtime can be a bit intimidating. It's better suited for experienced wargamers who are already familiar with the OCS series or who are looking for a deep and historically detailed challenge.
Does the game offer alternative or 'what if' scenarios?
Yes, absolutely! In addition to historical scenarios, the game includes an 'If I Was in Charge...' campaign version that allows both sides to explore different initial deployments, challenging the premise of an 'inevitable' outcome and adding a huge replayability factor.
Do I need a lot of table space to play?
With three maps included, two of which are large (22x34 inches), you'll definitely need a generous table. The longest campaign, for example, fits on a standard 4' x 6' table.
