Largest army2 points (minimum 3 knights)

Visible points and hidden points

Catan has a quirk that complicates counting: some points are public (settlements, cities, the two bonus cards) and some are secret (victory points on development cards). The visible score is almost never the real score.

The two bonus cards change hands during the game. Longest road needs at least five continuous roads and passes to whoever beats the current holder; largest army needs three knights and follows the same logic. Each swing moves two points at once.

That is why tracking each player's public score in real time matters: it is what lets you spot who is one move away from closing at ten.

Frequently Asked Questions

4 questions
How many Victory Points are needed to win in Catan?
In base Catan, the first player to reach 10 Victory Points on their turn wins.
How many points do you need to win Catan?
Ten in the base game. Some expansions and variants use higher targets, such as twelve or thirteen.
Can longest road change hands?
Yes. It goes to whoever has the longest continuous road, with a minimum of five, and moves whenever someone beats the current holder.
Why does the table score not match the final result?
Because development cards with victory points stay hidden until the end. It is common for a player to close at ten by revealing cards nobody was counting.
