Authority goes both ways
Authority is the life total in Star Realms and starts at 50 in a two-player game. Unlike a counter that only goes down, several cards restore authority, so the count swings both ways over the game.
Pace is what makes the math heavy: faction combos can deal 20 or more in a single turn, and doing that subtraction mentally in the middle of a long turn is where errors show up.
Bases absorb damage before authority and must be resolved first. Keeping the counts separate avoids deducting damage from authority that should have stopped at a base.
