Get ready for a trip through antiquity! Gentes: Deluxified Edition casts you as the leader of an ancient people striving to thrive across the Mediterranean. But forget the typical 'build everything' approach; here, time is your most treacherous resource. The standout feature is the innovative time track mechanism: every action you take consumes space on your personal player mat. If you opt for actions that consume more 'time' (represented by hourglass markers), you'll end up with fewer turns in that round. It's a constant tug-of-war between acting heavily now or playing efficiently to act more often later.
Managing your population is a delicate balancing act. Your player board uses a 'pushing' mechanic: if you train too many soldiers, you might inadvertently displace your merchants, as the total space for your people is strictly limited. Your goal is to build monuments and found cities to earn victory points and unlock new abilities. Cities are especially vital, as they can provide benefits or new action options, saving you from wasting precious turns just to collect money. Across six rounds divided into three eras, you'll also focus on set collection, gathering achievement symbols to trigger massive scoring combos.
This Deluxified Edition is a true collector's dream. It's packed with premium components: heavy metal coins, dual-layered player boards for a tactile feel, various meeple sizes, and even the 'New Cities' expansion included. It's a medium-weight strategy game where every decision regarding your timing and your people's development can mean the difference between a glorious empire and a civilization lost to the sands of time.
