About the game
What you do in a play session
In Tammany Hall you step into the gritty political world of 19th‑century New York, where the only rule is that power is seized through favors and backstabbing. Each player acts as a ward boss, helping immigrant groups settle, collecting the political favors they owe, and then cashing those credits to slander rivals, secure votes, and vie for the mayoralty every four years. The board depicts lower Manhattan divided into neighborhoods; holding the majority in an area grants influence and points. Rounds feature sealed‑bid auctions for offices and resources, while the Catch‑the‑Leader mechanic lets you challenge the current leader and flip the power balance. Variable player powers give each boss a unique ability—whether it’s persuasive charm or vote‑rigging—ensuring no two games feel the same. After each election the new mayor must placate opponents by assigning them offices they can use to undermine him in future turns, keeping alliances fleeting and mistrust constant. The game blends negotiation, territory building and auction mechanics, all flavored by the real history of Boss Tweed’s political machine. For 3‑5 players, a play‑time of about 90 minutes and a light weight (2.8/5) make it accessible to newcomers while still rewarding seasoned strategists who love urban political intrigue.
