About the game

What you do in a play session

In Santiago, each player becomes a landowner on the dry island of Antíago, Cape Verde. Every round, tiles representing various crops—bananas, sugarcane, potatoes, beans, and red peppers—enter the board. These tiles are auctioned in a "once around" format: each player gets one chance to bid in turn order, and the lowest bidder assumes the role of Canal Inspector. The inspector decides where the new irrigation canal will be built, while the others may propose locations and even bribe the inspector with money to sway the decision. Once the canal is placed, the crops are laid down next to it, each bearing a marker that shows how fertile the plot will be. If a plantation isn’t watered enough, its output plummets; repeated neglect can turn it into fallow ground. At game end, only cultivated land counts, and each crop type yields different points depending on the ownership markers. The strategy blends auctioning, bribery, commodity speculation, and area control: the earlier your plantation is irrigated and linked to others of the same type, the higher the yield and the more cash you earn. With a modest weight (about 2.5/5), Santiago appeals to fans of resource economics and light negotiation alike.
