About the game
What you do in a play session
Deep within the Lotus Galaxy, powerful clans wage a civil war using massive mechs piloted by space samurais. Each player takes on the role of a daimyo from one of the major clans, vying for the Galactic Emperor's throne. The board depicts galactic sectors divided into areas; controlling these zones grants influence and victory points. To advance, you manage action points that can be spent moving your mechs, attacking enemy territories, or playing cards that grant temporary abilities. Your hand of cards is crucial – some provide diplomatic bonuses, others let you launch huge fleets or unleash devastating attacks.
Diplomacy also plays a part: you can bargain for support from lesser clans, trading favors or resources to secure votes that help cement your claim to the throne. When talk fails, the samurai mechs step onto the field, offering "Take That" power to destroy opponent units or block strategic routes. Each clan has variable player powers, meaning the experience shifts each game and demands constant adaptation. The game blends area movement, area majority/influence, and set collection of cards or tokens that award extra points at the end. The mech miniatures give the game an impressive visual presence, while the robot‑warfare theme keeps the sci‑fi atmosphere alive. For 2‑4 players, a match lasts 60‑90 minutes, and a moderate complexity (2.5/5 weight) makes it accessible to newcomers yet deep enough for veterans. If you love strategic games with an epic theme, tactical combat, and a dash of negotiation, Starship Samurai offers a balanced mix of action and diplomacy, all wrapped in high‑quality components that truly bring the galaxy to life.
