About the game

What you do in a play session

In Tajuto, each player takes on the role of a Buddhist monk striving to reach the highest level of spirituality while helping to build a magnificent garden of eight pagodas. The historical backdrop dates back to 532, when Buddhism arrived in Japan and Prince Shotoku ordered the creation of a sacred village with eight towers, promising that the completion of the fourth pagoda would turn the place into a major pilgrimage site. On the board, monks use action tiles to draw pagoda tiles from an opaque bag, make offerings that generate meditation points, and acquire cards that speed up progress or award spirituality points. Activating extra actions or buying tiles costs meditation points, forcing careful resource management. The core tension lies in the bag: pagoda tiles shrink by level and come in different colors, but they can only be identified by feel. Players must balance the odds of pulling the right size with the chance of getting the desired color, employing betting and bluffing to mislead opponents. When the fourth pagoda is completed, the game ends and the monk with the most spirituality points becomes the Great Guardian of the Sacred Garden. The mix of action points, betting, and push‑your‑luck mechanics creates a tense yet accessible experience, with light rules (weight 2/5) and 45‑60 minute playtime, perfect for 2‑4 players who enjoy Oriental themes and strategic play without overwhelming complexity.
