In Spirit Island, magic still thrives, embodied by spirits of the land, the sky, and all natural things. But beware: European colonial powers are stretching their empires, and it's only a matter of time before they claim this island, where spirits still hold immense power. And when they do, the land itself, alongside the islanders, will fight back! Get ready for a deeply immersive and thematic cooperative game where your goal is to defend your island home from Invaders. You and your friends will take on the roles of land spirits, each with unique and fascinating elemental powers. Each turn, you simultaneously choose which power cards to play, spending energy to activate them. The trick is to combine power cards that match your spirit's elemental affinities to unleash incredible bonus effects. Some powers are lightning-fast, acting before the Invaders spread and wreak havoc, but other magics are slower, requiring careful planning to use effectively. In the Spirit phase, you gain energy and decide how to 'Grow': this could be reclaiming used power cards, seeking new powers, or spreading your presence into new areas of the island. The Invaders, in turn, expand across the island map in a somewhat predictable fashion. One turn, they explore new lands; the next, they build towns and cities; and the following turn, they ravage everything, bringing blight to the land and attacking any native islanders present. The islanders, of course, fight back and lend aid to the spirits, but not always exactly as you'd hoped. Some Powers work through the islanders, helping them, for example, to drive out the Invaders or cleanse the land of blight. The game escalates as it progresses: spirits gain more power and spread their influence, while the Invaders intensify their colonization efforts. Each turn represents 1-3 years of alternate history. At the start, winning requires destroying every last explorer, town, and city on the board. But as you frighten the Invaders more and more, victory becomes easier: they'll flee even if explorers or even towns and cities remain. Defeat comes if any spirit is destroyed, if the island is overrun by blight, or if the Invader deck is depleted before achieving victory. The game also includes different adversaries, such as a Swedish Mining Colony or a Remote British Colony. Each changes play in unique ways and offers different difficulty boosts to keep the game challenging as you gain skill.
